I was able to catch Despicable Me 2 on Thursday which was hosted by Universal and WCBS-FM 101.1.  The original film was one of the finest animations that I've ever seen that appealed to both kids and adults alike.  Their plot while simplistic, had appealing and quirky characters with a lot of sight gags that had you rolling on the floor or going aww.  With Despicable Me 2, if the formula isn't broken, why fix it?

While the plot changes slightly, almost everything else remains the same. Fans of the old film especially children will really enjoy this second helping of Gru, his girls and his Minions.   While the first one dealt with Gru trying to stay relevant among his super villain peers, the sequel has him hired to seek out and capture a super villain.  In the first film, we had the quirky Vector played by Jason Segel.  The super villain in the second film is a little less original and awe inspiring.

Whereas the first film dealt with family a lot, with the girls being orphans, and Gru growing to love them.  The sequel's focus can be said to be love.  Yes, Gru gets a love interest!  He's not the only one though, as eldest child Margo played by Miranda Cosgrove meets a boy which brings some hilarious responses out of Gru.  One of my favorite scenes though is towards the ends when the Minions sing a certain 1994 love song by the group All-4-One.

The music in the film is by the same duo in the original, Pharrell Williams and Heitor Pereira. The pair does an amazing job in setting the tone of the movie.  You'll be nodding your head once again to "Despicable Me" by Pharrell.

Overall, while I enjoyed the movie, you can't help but feel the jokes are getting just a little repetitious.  Sorry, but the fart gun is a little bit played out.  The love side plot was enjoyable, but the rest could have been better.  Still, though I think Despicable Me 2 would undoubtedly do well in the box office with both kids and adults alike.  If you or your child loved the first one, then definitely go see the second one.

Despicable Me 2 is rated PG and is out on July 3rd, 2013.  The run time is 1 hour and 38 minutes.
