There's been a lot of great comedies this Spring season.  Add The Way Way Back to that long list.  It's slated for release during the July 4th weekend and that's quite appropriate.  Even though some parts can get very deep in the subject matter, it is in essence a summer movie.  Like all tales of an awkward boy coming of age story, the story does follow a predictable pattern.  However, what makes this movie stands out is the impeccable acting.  In particular, the lead role of introvert Duncan played by Liam James is superb.  From the mannerism to facial expressions, he could not have done any better in my opinion.

The supporting cast is no slouch too.  Starting with Stepfather Trent, played by Steve Carell, it's good to see he's not playing his usual comedic goofball.  I was pleasantly surprise at carefree mentor Owen, played by Sam Rockwell.  He's definitely got the personality that could possibly replace Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark though not the build.  For the ladies, the beautiful teenage neighbor AnnaSophia Robb is simply adorable.  While Toni Collette, as Duncan's mother drags you in so many directions with her heartfelt performance.  I don't know if I want to slap her or hug her in her dealing with Trent and Duncan.

Overall, I would highly recommend this film.  It's quite different from the comedy of say This is the End where the jokes are crude, or The Heat where the jokes are more slapstick.  When I was leaving a member of the audience mentioned that the ending was terrible.  I have to disagree.  Given the pace of the movie and the characters involved if you've journey with them as you're watching the film.  Then you would realize why the mother did what she did, and why the movie ended the way it did.  In my opinion, the ending was perfect.

The movie is rated PG-13 and will be released July 5th, 2013.  The run time is 1 hour and 43 minutes.

Rating: 4.0 Stars out of 5.0 Stars.
