The Lone Ranger first appeared on radio during the Great Depression and last appeared on the big screen 32 years ago, and last on the small screen in 2003 on the WB Network.  Disney's remake of the series stars Armie Hammer as The Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp as his sidekick Tonto.  The movie while fun with the hilarious dialogue between The Lone Ranger and Tonto only carries the movie so far.

The movie for me runs a bit long with a plot that seems to meander along trying to prolong unnecessarily what could otherwise be a fantastic film.  The humor and action is all there, and in top form, especially by Johnny Depp.  Armie while adequate as The Lone Ranger is easily outshine by Depp's quirky Tonto.

The villains of the film in contrast was a bit disappointing due to a lack of originality and fear inspiring performances.  I enjoyed William Fichtner's performance in the television series Prison Break, but his character Butch Cavendish in the Lone Ranger never once felt threatening other than the scene with The Lone Ranger's brother.  Perhaps it's a result of Disney toning down the violence for a PG-13 rating?

If you're a fan of the original series, I can't say for certain if you'll enjoy it or not as it was mostly before my time.  A lot of the catch phrases and the familiar William Tell Overture music  all makes an appearance in the film.  I've also never been particularly into Westerns either but overall still enjoyed it despite it being long.

I would recommend this film still despite its flaws.  It makes for a great lazy July 4th morning film or Saturday matinee if you have the chance to watch it.  During the screening I attended Armie Hammer made a surprise appearance before the film introducing the film.  He promised an exciting film and for the most part it was able to deliver.
