While the aspirations of a dust cropper in Planes may be sky high, Disney's latest animation flies low below the clouds.  The animation is good but uninpiring for an inspirational story.  It's a typical generic underdog story as Dusty Crophopper played by Dane Cook wants to compete in a race across the globe despite his humble technical specs.

Besides the story being unoriginal, what really sets it apart from Disney's Cars from which their world is built on, is a lack of charismatic characters that made Cars shine.  Dane just doesn't have that stand out voice needed for voice acting.  There's no uniqueness or charisma when he read his lines as suppose to Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen.  The same can be said for the sidekick Chug voiced by Brad Garrett, as compared to in Cars, Mater voiced by Larry the Cable Guy.

The animation in itself and the numerous aerial characters are well done as you would expect from a Disney film.  The 3D while there is just barely noticeable.  With regards to the design of the world, it's interesting to note how the cars dominate such as key structures like the Statue of Liberty is designed as a car.  As well, how the cars and planes are mostly segregated as seen in the audiences of the stadiums they start off from and finish in.

Overall, I would not recommend watching this in the theater.  I've read that this film was initially intended as a Direct to Video release and it should have stayed that way.  Like Cars, the film will appealed more to young boys but my daughter also enjoyed it.
