With Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs 2 coming out soon, I caught up on the original that came out back in 2009.  The movie is based on a children's book of the same title written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett in 1978.  While I've never read the book, the movie with its bright colorful characters and intriguing story does enough things right to say that it's no wonder it's future is not cloudy.

The film is your classic tale of a son trying to gain acceptance from his father.  Despite being a typical tale, the marriage with the material from the book and the colorful characters makes it stands out.  The lead character Flint Lockwood played by Bill Hader is an inspiring inventor.  He's had it in his genes ever since he was young but has never quite been successful.  When he attempts to solve his town's problem of unwanted sardines as the only food source, hilarity ensues.  His transmutation device to convert water into any food accidentally rockets off into the atmosphere, bringing down upon the town burgers, and upon Flint, fame and notoriety   But as with all good things, especially rogue transmuting devices that are overtaxed, must come to an end.  As things start to spiral out of control for Flint, unfortunately the laughs are not in abundance.  Which for me in a kids movie such as this is a must.

But as I've said before the characters do stand out.  And in particular Officer Earl Devereaux played by Mr. T.  Those of you not familiar with him, he was in a Rocky III as Clubber Lang as well the action TV series the A-Team, both of which are several decades old.  So it was a pleasant surprise to me to see him as the voice actor, and a good one at that.

Overall, I would recommend this film.  Besides what I previously mentioned, the movie does it right in being appealing to both girls and boys.  With romantic scenes, talking monkeys and fighting chickens, this movie has it all.  While the movie won't have you on the floor dying of laughter, it will have you smiling and chuckling every now and then.  And that was apparently enough with its box office and DVD/Blu Ray success, to bring us its sequel in a few weeks.
