Review by Stephen M.
Mr. Right is not your typical romantic comedy especially when both parties are not quite right in the head. Anna Kendrick plays as Martha, whose down in the dumps after catching her boyfriend cheating on her. She has a chance encounter with Francis played by Sam Rockwell who is an assassin that assassinates the people who hires him. Yes, they both have issues which makes this the kind of quirky film you would like to take on a date.
Great actors, great premise, what could go wrong with a film like this? Unfortunately quite a bit. I think the biggest problem I have with the film is Anna's character which is a bit of a letdown as I am a huge fan of her movies. There is something about her character that feels disingenuous. Perhaps the filmmakers intended that to be the case, as the old saying goes that it takes a nut to love a nut? Even Sam's character, which we know is off from both his actions to his offer mentor saying so, just doesn't feel right for the character that he is pulling off. The entire plot is fairly pointless so that also adds to dilemma of trying to like it more but how can you?
Overall, while the film has its minuses, it still is a fun sick ride of action and humor if you don't take the film and the characters too seriously. The film to me is like Deadpool but less well put together with less violence and raunchiness. There is enough humor and action though that still makes this enjoyable especially as a matinee as a date movie. The film is definitely not Anna's or Sam's best movie, but they're a fun pairing and deserves a shot albeit not at full price.
